Fiction which unfolds in the emergency room is the favourite of romantic readers, it has been revealed.

Sales of hospital novels in the US brought in $1.2 billion and make up a staggering 39.3 per cent of the fiction sold in the US
.

According to Brendan Kelly, an Irish physician with a passion for the books, the protagonists are usually fairly easy to predict, but it doesn't stop the readers coming back for more.

"There was a marked preponderance of brilliant, tall muscular, male doctors with chiselled features, working in emergency medicine.

"They were commonly Mediterranean origin and had personal tragedies in their pasts."

Female heroines in the books are often nurses, or worked in neonatal care. All were described as "skilled, beautiful and determined but still compassionate", reports the AFP.

Both male and female characters who are involved in the romance had often given up elements of their personal life in order to care for the sick, and most of the patients in the novels recover from life threatening illnesses.ADNFCR-1016-ID-18339828-ADNFCR
