... Boys on top when it comes to finances? Boys on top when it comes to finances?

12 March 2008

Men in the UK still think they are in control of their household's finances, but their women seem to disagree, according to new research.

A study conducted by Halifax found that 57 per cent of men still think they hold the purse strings when it comes to managing their mortgages and household expenditure.

But just six per cent of women say that their boyfriends, partners or husbands make the financial decisions.

Rather, 36 per cent of women said they were the primary decision maker when it comes to finances in their household.

However, just three per cent of men thought this to be true, with the vast majority not conceding financial control to their other halves.

It seems financial decision-making between couples is also a generational issue, with 59 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds consulting their partners on finances.

Jaedon Green, head of mortgage development at Halifax, said: "No matter who holds the purse strings, whether it's you, your partner or both, it's important to seek sound financial advice to aid your decision."
