... Brits making excuses not to date Brits making excuses not to date

6 November 2007

More than five million Britons have not been on a date in the last six months, according to a new survey.

And singles are coming up with all sorts of justifications for their failure to get out there on the dating scene
.

Shyness is a top reason for staying home. Whether its asking people out or just making yourself available to invitations.

Many also cite fussiness as what is putting them off dating.

And lack of opportunity is also ranked highly, as busy lifestyles means many people cannot find the time to meet people, let alone go on dates.

Desperation is another factor which can make dating difficult. When people feel they are lagging behind their friends and are desperate to settle down, this can send off warning singles to potential partners or make people steer themselves only towards those with spouse potential.

Dr Victoria Lukats, a psychiatrist with PARHIP who carried out the survey, said: "Forget the usual excuses… hectic lifestyle, lack of time and a dearth of suitable people. It's not lifestyle that's holding people back from forming relationships - it's what's going on in their heads."

The survey also revealed that just one in seven first dates leads to a second.ADNFCR-1016-ID-18345216-ADNFCR
