... Brits strive for A-List holidays Brits strive for A-List holidays

31 July 2008

One in three Britons choose a holiday destination because they have heard it is popular with celebrities, according to a new poll.

An estimated £64 billion is spent by sun-seeking Brits on holidays each year and a significant number of them pick where they go depending on its celebrity reputation.

This fascination with celebrity culture is making hotspots such as St Tropez, Dubai and Rio de Janeiro more popular among non-celebrities who are just hoping for a taste of the good life.

Around 20 per cent of Britons spend more than £2,500 on holidays each year, with those in the south-east splashing out the most.

Holidays are the most important thing we spend on, apart from buying a home and investing, according to Cater Allen, which undertook the survey.

Britons are also spending too much when they are out there and carrying too much cash around with them while away.

Sally Watts, head of marketing at Cater Allen, said: "Apart from the obvious security risks of taking too much cash with you when you travel, the costs associated with transferring cash before you leave or using your debit or credit card while abroad can be staggering.

"It's your hard earned cash and even though you are on holiday your money should always be working for you."
