... Cohabiting couples 'just as committed' Cohabiting couples 'just as committed'

20 September 2007

As more and more couples choose not to tie the knot but simply to live together, people ask them why they are not getting married.

Many make the assumption that the relationship is temporary or that living together is a test run to see the couple could function if they were to marry.

But a great number of couples have no plans to get married and see their cohabiting relationship as a permanent fixture.

And for many people, their reason for dating is not to find someone they can marry, with many saying they are simply looking for someone to send time with and talk to.

Marion Willetts, an associate professor of sociology at Illinois State University, told CNN: "People don't question, 'Why did you get married?' They only ask you 'Why haven't you got married?'.

"This isn't just some convenient thing or trial marriage. They're just as committed to their relationship as married people."

She continued: "They're in this for the long haul. This isn't just some convenient thing or trial marriage. They're just as committed to their relationship as married people."ADNFCR-1043-ID-18288290-ADNFCR
