... Couples bound by dinnertime tradition Couples bound by dinnertime tradition

29 January 2008

A new survey has revealed that 80 per cent of men and 89 per cent of women would do nothing saucier than hold hands in a restaurant.

And tradition clearly rules, as 85 per cent of the men who took part in the survey by toptable.co.uk said they would pay for dinner, regardless of whether they fancied their date.

Less appealingly, 16 per cent would promise to call, knowing full well they never would.

Three in four of toptable's male diners think the most expensive dish will win the lady's affections. And it seems they are not overestimating female materialism, given that 72 per cent of women believe gents should pay, with 50 per cent of the fairer sex making a 'fake offer' to contribute.

Michelle Smith, editor of Top Table, commented: "Dining in Britain may have come along leaps and bounds in the last ten years, but in a modern world of social networking and internet relationships, old fashioned values at the dinner table still apply.

"Our survey shows the great British public live up to their stereotype of being reserved and prudish in public when it comes to matters of the heart."
