... Couples 'should equal out talk time' Couples 'should equal out talk time'

5 December 2007

Women should keep quiet if they want people to look favourably on their relationship, a new survey has suggested.

It was found that people look negatively at couples where the woman out-chats the man, so men should make sure they do their bit for the conversation if they are to be seen as a good couple, reports LiveScience.

Explaining this rather out-dated view, the researchers from Green Mountain College in Vermont look back to traditions.

Jennifer Sellers, lead author of the study, said: "We reasoned because men are expected to be in a position of power over women, couples in which the woman is verbally dominating the man would be rated more harshly than couples that adhere to the traditional role."

Both men and women observing couples where the woman was more assertive came away with negative feelings about the couple.

But the researchers point out talk time does not always equate to power in a relationship, although it may mean you get your ideas across more.ADNFCR-1043-ID-18382929-ADNFCR
