... Couples splitting over credit crunch Couples splitting over credit crunch

21 November 2008

One in three people feels financial crisis will bring about the downfall of a relationship, according to a new study.

As the credit crunch bites, many couples are struggling financially, which is causing a strain on their relationships with their other halves.

A survey of 10,000 people asked respondents how important it was to have financial stability in a relationship.

Those aged 40 and above were the most worried about the strain on their relationships, with 36 per cent saying they were ready to say goodbye to their partner if they ran out of money.

Respondents aged between 18 and 24 were the most romantic, with 80 per cent believing financial hardships are irrelevant or will help bring a couple together.

The survey also found that men are more optimistic, with 34 per cent of woman saying they would ditch a spouse who is having money problems, compared to 28 per cent of men.

Research out from Abbey this week showed disposable income is down 29 per cent compared to two years ago, with 64 per cent of Britons having to make financial sacrifices in the run-up to pay-day.ADNFCR-1043-ID-18888013-ADNFCR
