... Dating online - what to watch out for Dating online - what to watch out for

27 November 2008

When looking for that special someone, it is becoming increasingly popular to hunt for Mr or Ms Right on the internet.

Online dating sites are no longer the taboo subject they once were, with a huge number of people now using them to search for a new partner.

However, there are many elements to consider when looking online for love, as this method of dating can be quite different to the more traditional ways of finding a relationship.

According to dating expert Elizabeth Aloni, one of the most important things to think about is the aspects of a partner that you are not willing to compromise on.

Writing for the Chicago Examiner, Ms Aloni explained that a "list of the non-negotiables for your match" will help you to put the most relevant and useful information into your profile.

Another top tip is to make a point of highlighting your individuality, perhaps asking friends or family members to tell you what they think are your most standout qualities.

Ms Aloni also recommends that online daters "be specific" about yourself and the things you are looking for in a partner. As an example, she suggests expanding on points such as "I like to travel" by including what parts of the world you have been to and what places you would like to visit next.

Interestingly, she suggests that online daters should adopt a "less is more approach" to their profile, by being specific about a small number of things, rather than having a huge range of topics broadly covered.

What's more, Ms Aloni stressed that honesty is the best policy when it comes to internet dating.

The expert explained: "This is not the time to worry what other people want to hear. This is about standing up for who you are and what kind of relationship you want to create.

"If you can't ask for it, you won't get it. It’s that simple. If you want to find a committed relationship
