... Divorce 'damages environment' Divorce 'damages environment'

4 December 2007

Scientists from Michigan State University have made a somewhat bizarre connection between divorce and damage to the planet.

They claim that when people divorce, more energy is used as people live alone.

They found that divorced couples use between 42 and 61 per cent more resources than families who live in one house together.

Divorced couples also have homes with 33 to 95 per cent more rooms than married households.

And when couples reconcile the effect they have on the environment is significantly reduced.

Divorce has been on the increase in a number of countries due to the relaxation in laws permitting people to ends their marriages. This has made the environmental impact of divorce all the more stark.

Professor Jianguo Liu, from Michigan State University, said: "We're showing divorce has significant competition for water and space. On the other hand, more divorce demands more energy. This creates a challenging dilemma and requires more creative solutions."ADNFCR-1043-ID-18381166-ADNFCR
