... Divorce rates down but up among older Brits Divorce rates down but up among older Brits

4 September 2008

British couples are more determined to stay together than ever, with new research revealing divorce rates are falling.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show divorce was at its lowest rate for 26 years.

Experts said the fall in divorce rates may be down to the fact that Britons wait until they are older and wiser and know their partner better before walking down the aisle.

Despite the overall divorce rate decrease, the research does show however that there are more over-60s splitting up.

Last year, there were 13,678 divorces among older Britons, up from 12,636 in 2006 and 9,052 in 1997.

The over-60 group was the only age bracket that saw an increase among both men and women.

Commenting on the data, Marilyn Stowe, divorce lawyer at Stowe Family Law, said: "People now have more energy in their later years and realise there is nothing left in their marriage once they have had their career and the children have left home."
