... Educated women 'more likely to tie the knot' Educated women 'more likely to tie the knot'

7 April 2008

Women with university degrees are more likely to get married than those who are less educated, according to new research.

An Australian study found that – contrary to popular belief – it seems that those who continue their education beyond secondary school increase their likelihood of getting hitched.

Social analysts have traditionally believed that pursuing education and a career makes women less likely to tie the knot.

However, analysis of census figures from 2006 revealed that over the past ten years this has changed, with more women with degrees now getting married than those with no qualifications.

Genevieve Heard, a research fellow at Monash University's Centre for Population and Urban Research, which carried out the study, said: "What we're now seeing is that highly educated women are in fact more likely to marry than their less educated counterparts, so clearly the lack of better educated men is not an obstacle to marriage."

She added: "Now it's the case that for both sexes it seems to be that the more education and the more earning potential you have, the more likely you are to succeed in forming and formalising a partnership."

But the study also showed that the rate of marriage had fallen for women as a whole across all age categories.
