... English men top in chat-up lines English men top in chat-up lines

3 November 2008

British men are the best at chat-up lines and more likely to win the girl than their American or Aussie counterparts, according to new research.

A survey by SpinVox showed that 34 per cent of women responded best to the pulling techniques of British Casanovas, followed by Americans with 32 per cent and Australians with 27 per cent
.

Conducted among 4,000 residents of English-speaking countries, the survey showed Antipodeans are most likely to get the cold shoulder as 52 per cent of female respondents said they ignored Aussies that tried to chat them up.

Canadian men were next in line in the list of men most likely to get the cold shoulder, followed by Americans.

It seems British charm and humour is what makes them most successful with the girls. Tried and tested chat-up lines such as 'Did I hurt when you fell from heaven?' fared better against crass Aussie pick-up lines such as 'I'd like to didgeridoo you' or 'Wanna see my koala?'"

Despite women preferring the English approach, the survey did show that women are three times more likely to sleep with an Australian they had just met rather than an Englishman.

The stereotype of an Englishman as a Mr Darcy or James Bond figure also does the nationality little harm when trying to woo the ladies.

Commenting, Phillip Hodson, a fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, said: "The great British chat up line is alive and well because the legendary British sense of humour is second to none - we are naturally funny.

"This gift is vital when it comes to romance; the psychological evidence shows that a good sense of humour is an all-time winner when it comes to dating. Nearly every personal advert features `must have GSOH` and that says it’s a priority."

But having success with the ladies comes at a cost for Englishmen, as the figures reveal that British women are three times more likely than America
