... Families 'have little influence' on sexual prefere Families 'have little influence' on sexual prefere

27 June 2008

You might think that your choice of partner is heavily influenced by your friends and family, but new scientific research reveals that social attitudes have little to do with the Mr or Miss Right we choose.

A study undertaken at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden reveals that the attitudes of friends and families have little influence on our choice of sexual partner.

Carried out in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London, the study looked at the attitudes towards sexuality of 7,600 sets of Swedish twins aged between 20 and 47.

It found that seven per cent of the twins had been in a sexual relationship with someone of the same sex.

Associate Professor Niklas Langstrom, one of the researchers, said: "The results show, that familial and public attitudes might be less important for our sexual behaviour than previously suggested.

"Instead, genetic factors and the individual's unique biological and social environments play the biggest role. Studies like this are needed to improve our basic understanding of sexuality and to inform the public debate."
