... Financial wake-up call for newlyweds Financial wake-up call for newlyweds

3 September 2008

So you have found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with and you are planning to tie the knot.

While you may fork out a shed load of money to give yourself the perfect big day and pay it off straight away, new research reveals the cost of setting up home together is often an underestimated cost.

The study by AA Personal Loans found that 87 per cent of brides and grooms pay the cost of their weddings off straight away, but do not plan for the costs of married life which follow.

Though unromantic, white goods such as washing machines and fridges are the most expensive costs and 3.4 million couples feel having to fork out for these goods in the early days of marriage puts strain on their relationships with their other half.

And of course there is the cost of buying a new property and paying for the pitter patter of tiny feet.

Terry Prendergast, chief executive of Marriage Care, said: "Getting married is one of the most joyous experiences for a couple, however, the cost of weddings, honeymoons and stocking the new house all bear a cost and for many, the reality of this spending is sometimes lost in the ecstasy of romance.

"Therefore it is important that couples are prepared for the first year to eighteen months of married life. At Marriage Care we help couples prepare their relationship for times of both profit and loss, giving them a solid investment for the future."
