... Hips not you, it's me Hips not you, it's me

A woman's swaying hips can actually serve to ward off the attentions of men, a new study has revealed.

Although men may find such a walk attractive, it signals to them that the woman is not ready for breeding
.

Indeed, the researchers from Queen's University in Ontario found that women with a less 'sexy' step were perceived as more likely to be ready to conceive.

This serves to contradict previous research which found women to alert their behaviour to become more sexually alluring when they were at their most fertile.

But the scientists believe that the tendency may in fact be a protective mechanism on the part of women, allowing them to disguise their most fertile time from men who observe them from a distance.

Explaining the findings, Dr Meghan Provost, study leader, said: "If women are trying to protect themselves from sexual assault at times of peak fertility it would make sense for them to advertise attractiveness on a broad scale when they are not fertile."

Meanwhile, features such as a change of expression or smell, which may be visible to those who get close to a woman, such as close friends, will be more evident, allowing women to select these men as more suitable mates.ADNFCR-1016-ID-18348303-ADNFCR
