... Men want beauty, women want wealth Men want beauty, women want wealth

4 September 2007

When looking for a partner, women are more likely to choose a man who is wealthy, while men are attracted to women who are attractive.

Women are also much more selective in choosing a partner.

Participants in a speed-dating event were asked to say what it was they looked for the most when assessing a potential partner. The most common response was someone who was like themselves, but in fact conformed to set patterns.

While men wanted to see every second woman again, women were only interested in a third of the men they spoke to.

Lead researcher Peter Todd explained that while humans may pride themselves on being highly evolved, most still behave like the stereotypical Neanderthals when it comes to choosing a mate.

He said: "Evolutionary theories in psychology suggest that men and women should trade off different traits in each other and when we look at the actual mating choices people make, this is what we finding evidence for.

"Ancestral individuals who made their mating choices this way had an evolutionary advantage in greater numbers of successful offspring."ADNFCR-1043-ID-18267159-ADNFCR
