Online dating a hit with Muslims

Online dating is taking off among British Asians as a way to meet like-minded people without many of the pressures associated with face-to-face dating.

Since Muslims are not permitted to date before marriage, online dating sites provide an opportunity to take a look at potential partners and see if they get along without going against the rules of their culture.
According to Adeem Younis, who runs Shaadi.com, a dating website specifically for Muslim people, many parents are now turning away from traditional arranged marriages and opting to get online in the search for a daughter or son-in-law.
Denise Knowles, a counsellor with Relate, told the Times of dating sites: "They let you design your perfect partner. It's a way of meeting people and you don't have to continue if it doesn't work out - that's what's different from strictly arranged marriages."
