... Survey reveals true cost of love Survey reveals true cost of love

10 February 2008

The average Brit spends over £70 on Valentine's Day, a new study has revealed.

While the loved-up average £69.90, single people typically spend £72.60, according to the research by PayPal.

This is equivalent to 15 per cent of the mean weekly salary.

One in three of us buy gifts worth between £50 and £99, rising to 44 per cent among 18-24 year olds.

And a lavish 22 per cent splash out on presents costing between £100 and 249.

Cristina Hoole, spokeswoman for PayPal, remarked: "It would seem that romance is far from dead as almost half of Brits will be splashing out a massive £1.6 billion on their loved ones this week.

"With Christmas only a few weeks behind us, millions will be hitting the shops en masse, however one in five of us will choose to head online and avoid the crowds."

However, 36 per cent of couples eschew tradition and do not give Valentine's gifts.
