... The look of love The look of love

9 December 2008

They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul but new research reveals that we are not using them to get ahead in the dating game.

Despite 53 per cent of people believing in love at first sight, a significant number of singletons do not use their eyes to flirt with people they fancy.

Research by The College of Optometrists reveals that 21 per cent of us actively avoid making eye contact with an attractive stranger.

If we believe in love at first sight then flirty eye contact with people we do not know could lead to love, but not if we go about averting contact.

The study revealed that women are more romantic, with around three quarters saying they believed in love at first sight or were undecided.

This was compared to around two thirds of men who felt the same way about the question of love at first sight, website femalefirst.co.uk reveals.

Men are however more confident with 17 per cent of them avoiding eye contact with a sexy stranger compared to 24 per cent of women.

Commenting on the study, Dr Susan Blakeney, optometric adviser to The College of Optometrists, said: "Sometimes we need to be reminded of the importance of our eyes on a daily basis in every area of our lives; not only to look great, but to stay healthy.

"If you believe in falling in love at first sight, you'd better make sure you're looking after your vision; especially as looking at an attractive stranger seems to get more common with age, which is when most eye problems will really be an issue!"
