... The secret of happiness The secret of happiness

27 January 2008

It's often seen as something elusive and indefinable, which starts to disappear if you try to pin down its source or nature.

But a new study claims that happiness can be measured and that one of the most important indicators of happiness is relationship success.

This is not surprising in itself, but the study also determined that the very happy people were not the most wealthy or educated.

The US researchers found that those who classified themselves as eights and nines on the 10-point life satisfaction scale were often more successful than those who rated themselves 10s in terms of their income, education and political engagement.

Ed Diener, an author of the study, said that happiness generally correlates with earning more, high-status employment and fulfilling relationships.

He continued: "Happy people are more likely [than unhappy people] to get married, are more likely to stay married, are more likely to think their marriage is good.

"They're more likely to volunteer. They're more likely to be rated highly by their supervisor and they're more likely to make more money."
