... The sexual revolution, 50 years on The sexual revolution, 50 years on

18 September 2007

A debate on Radio 4 recently took place to assess how sexual liberation has progressed in the last 50 years.

It marks the 50th anniversary since the publication of a report which suggested homosexuality should no longer be illegal. The report brought about a new generation of sexual discussion and openness, the BBC reports.

Today, the discussion of sexual wants and premarital sexual relationships has become more mainstream.

Mariella Frostrup, the presenter of the programme, said: "It's a lot easier to talk about sex, particularly as a woman.

"In 50 years we've come from a place where admitting to having a sexual desire was something frowned upon.

"Women can admit they want and like sex and it they are feeling really daring they can describe what they really like."

But according to Frostrup, this has served to make sex into a let-down for many.

She continued: "Even if people are talking about it more - and that's good - their expectation of what it should be is exaggerated and that means disappointment a lot of the time."

Marriage, according to those on the debating panel, has remained an area in which sexual discussion is still limited.ADNFCR-1043-ID-18284633-ADNFCR
