... Wannabe chefs in kitchen mishaps Wannabe chefs in kitchen mishaps

25 April 2008

Sometimes the way to a man or woman's heart is through his or her stomach, but research shows that Britain is turning into a nation of kitchen klutzes.

A study conducted by esure home insurance revealed that six million people in the UK have been involved in some sort of cooking mishap.

One in ten would-be cooks have had some kind of kitchen disaster in their attempts to emulate the handiwork of Jamie Oliver or Nigella Lawson.

Some 73 per cent of survey respondents labelled themselves either amateur, novice or useless chefs, but despite this 75 per cent would still try a tricky culinary technique.

"It's great to see that kitchens across the country are becoming hubs of creative cookery – fuelling a passion for food and the growth of the dinner party," Tony Tobin, a celebrity chef on BBC Ready Steady Cook, said.

"However, all celebrity chefs have had years of training and people at home must remember this when attempting to recreate any dishes they see on TV."

He warned people to make sure they are comfortable with the basic cooking skills before attempting any complicated culinary techniques. He added: "And prepare your kitchen before starting. A cluttered kitchen is a dangerous kitchen."
