... Women fall for self-deprecating charms Women fall for self-deprecating charms

29 July 2008

Making fun of yourself is one of the best ways of getting a woman to fall for you, according to new scientific research.

A study published in the Journal of Evolutionary Psychology next month shows that men like dashing actor Hugh Grant are some of the most attractive to the opposite sex.

The research shows that women love a man who can display a bit of self-deprecating wit, as Grant does in his fit films including Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill.

Like he women in the hit romantic comedies, women just cannot help but fall for the self-deprecating charm.

The study, called Dissing Oneself: The Sexual Attractiveness of Self-Deprecating Humour, was carried out over two years.

During the study, women were asked to listen to tape recordings of men talking about themselves. It was found that the men who could take the 'mickey' out of themselves were given the highest scores.

Gil Greengross, from the University of New Mexico, which carried out the study, said: "Many studies show that a sense of humour is sexually attractive to women but we've found that self-deprecating humour is the most attractive of all.

"People who used this humour were considered to be far more desirable as mates."
However, he warned: "It is a risky form of humour because it can draw attention to one's real faults, thereby diminishing the self-deprecator's status in the eyes of others."
