Perfect voices revealed in study

Dame Judi Dench, Honor Blackman and Mariella Frostrup contribute to the perfect female voice, according to linguistics experts.

A study led by Sheffield University linguistics professor Andrew Linn for Post Office Telecoms created a formula to find the perfect voice and found that these British luvvies each have extremely pleasing voices.
The study also found that when it comes to the male voice, Alan Rickman, Jeremy Irons and Michael Gambon's tones were the most pleasurable.
The voices were judged in terms of tone, frequency, pauses between sentences and speed.
Professor Linn said: "As humans we instinctively know which voices send shivers down our spine and which make us shudder with disgust.
"Most men find Mariella Frostrup's voice mesmerising because it's deep, slow and confident."
He said that Jeremy Irons' "deep, gravelly tones" enable his audience to trust him, with his frequency hitting 200 words per minute.
Professor Linn said: "This formula gives us an exciting glimpse into the way voices work and what makes them appealing or repelling."
