... Women 'turned on' by men's sweaty pits Women 'turned on' by men's sweaty pits

13 June 2008

The smell of men's sweat turns women on, according to a new scientific study.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, found that the chemical androstadienone – found in male sweat – could cause sexual arousal, brain activation and a change of mood among heterosexual women.

Published in the Journal of Neuroscience, the study showed that humans, just like many animals can affect the physiology of the opposite sex through the smell of their secretion.

Believe it or not, male underarm sweat helps to boost women's moods, according to the researchers.

Commenting, Claire Wyart, a post-doctoral fellow at the university, said: "This is the first time anyone has demonstrated that a change in women's hormonal levels is induced by sniffing an identified compound of male sweat."

She said however that more cognitive studies need to be undertaken in order to find out how the chemical – a derivative of testosterone - affects "female cognitive functions".
